Is a water softener worth it in Elgin?
For most Elgin houses, yes — but not for the reasons the door-to-door salesperson gives. The plumbing savings are real; the skin-and-hair pitch is not why it pays for itself.

The short answer
The short answer
In Elgin a softener usually pays for itself over about seven to ten years, mostly by extending water heater life and cutting scale out of fixtures and valves. It is worth it if you own the home and plan to stay; it is rarely worth it in a rental or if you are moving inside three years.
What hard water actually costs you
Our water runs roughly 250 to 350 ppm, which is hard to very hard. That mineral does not stay dissolved. It drops out wherever water is heated or sits still, which means the bottom of your water heater, the seats inside every angle stop, the cartridge in every mixing valve, and the small orifices in dishwashers and ice makers.
The single biggest line item is the water heater. Scale insulates the burner from the water, the steel runs hotter than designed, and the glass lining fails years early — we cover the mechanism in detail in why water heaters fail early here. A softener does not eliminate that, but it slows it down enough to matter over a decade.
The second is the one nobody counts: valves. Angle stops that never get exercised in hard water seize shut. When you finally need to close one — during a leak, at night — it will not turn, and a fifteen-minute repair becomes a whole-house shutoff and a wet floor.
What it does not do
It does not make the water safer to drink. Softening is an ion exchange — calcium and magnesium out, a small amount of sodium in. If your concern is taste, chlorine, or contaminants, you want filtration, which is a different unit and often a different install location.
It does not fix existing scale. Anything already deposited inside your water heater or your pipe stays there. A softener installed at year nine of a water heater's life is protecting a tank that is already most of the way through.
And it will not, despite the sales pitch, meaningfully change your skin or your laundry in a way most people notice after the first month. Some do. It is not what makes the economics work.
Running costs people forget to ask about
Salt, at roughly two to four bags a month for a typical household. Water, because the unit regenerates and sends that rinse down the drain — a metered unit that regenerates on demand rather than on a timer uses considerably less. And the resin bed itself, which lasts somewhere around ten to fifteen years here before it needs replacing.
Ask for the regeneration type before you buy. A timer-based unit that regenerates every third day whether it needs to or not will cost you noticeably more in salt and water over its life than a metered one, for identical results.
When we tell people not to bother
If you are renting, or selling inside three years, the payback window does not close before you leave. If your water heater is already nine or ten years old, replace that first and add the softener with the new tank — otherwise you are protecting something you are about to throw away.
And if the actual complaint is taste or smell rather than scale, a softener is the wrong device entirely. Our water filtration page covers which unit solves which problem, because they get conflated constantly.
How much does a whole-house softener cost installed in Elgin?
It depends on where the main enters the house and whether a drain and outlet are already nearby. The unit is the smaller half of the number on most jobs — the install location drives the rest. We quote it flat after looking at the entry point.
Will a softener damage my copper pipe?
No, at correct settings. Over-softening — running the hardness setting far below what the water actually needs — makes water more aggressive to copper over time. A unit set up properly for local hardness does not do this.
Can I put one in myself?
The plumbing is within reach of a confident DIYer if there is already a loop. The parts people get wrong are the bypass, the drain air gap, and the electrical, and those are the parts that cause damage rather than just not working.

Does liquid drain cleaner actually work?
Short answer: sometimes, on hair and soap in a bathroom sink. On a kitchen line, a main line, or anything you have poured it into twice already, it is doing more harm than the clog.

Most of the time it's a worn flapper, an inexpensive part you can often replace yourself. Here's how to find the cause with a simple dye test, and when it's time to call a plumber.
