New copper piping installed during a whole-home repipe

Overview

Alexander Plumbing provides professional pipe repair, replacement and leak detection for residential, commercial and industrial properties throughout Elgin and the surrounding communities. That includes whole-house repiping, complete water supply and drain piping replacement, replacing outdated galvanized water piping with new copper, underground pipe repairs, leak locating, and repairs to damaged or deteriorating plumbing systems.

Our experienced plumbers work with copper, PEX, PVC, CPVC, cast iron and galvanized steel, so the fix matches the pipe you actually have. Not every problem needs a repipe: one leak is a repair. Hidden leaks, corroded pipes, recurring drain leaks and aging plumbing across the whole house are a pattern, and replacing the system once costs less than patching it for years. We handle both, from a localized pipe repair to a complete system replacement.

Symptoms

Signs your pipes need repair or replacement

Repeat pinhole leaks

Copper failing from the inside out at multiple points means the pipe wall is thinning throughout, not just where it happened to open up. Each patch buys months.

Aging galvanized pipe

Galvanized steel corrodes inside, restricting water flow, lowering pressure and causing recurring leaks and rusty water. It cannot be cleaned out. Replacing it with new copper water lines restores proper flow and lasts for decades.

Hidden or underground leaks

A water bill that keeps climbing, a damp spot that never dries, or a soggy patch in the yard can mean a leak you cannot see. We locate it first, then repair only what needs repairing.

Recurring drain leaks

Cracked cast iron, failing joints and deteriorating drain lines leak again after every patch. We repair the damaged section or replace the drain piping outright.

Our process

How we repair and replace pipe

  1. Locate the problem, then a fixed quote

We find the leak or failure before we price anything. You get one written price for the job, whether it is a single repair or a whole-house repipe, covering pipe, fittings, permit, patching and inspection.

  2. Protection and access

Floors and furnishings get covered before anything is opened. We cut the minimum number of access points needed to route new pipe, and we show you where they will be before we cut.

  3. The right pipe, pressure tested

Copper, PEX, PVC, CPVC or cast iron, matched to the job and the building. Galvanized water lines are replaced with new copper. Every system is pressure tested and inspected before anything is closed up.

  4. Patch, texture, and clean up

Drywall is patched and textured back. Most homeowners stay in the house throughout; water is off during working hours and back on each evening.

Scope

Pipe work we handle

Every job is quoted as one fixed price after we have seen it. A single repair, a drain line and a whole-house repipe are very different jobs, and square footage, fixture count, stories and access all move the number, so we will not guess over the phone.

Repiping questions

Answers before you book.

More questions on our full FAQ page.

Copper or PEX — which should I choose?

Both are code-compliant and both are good. Copper is rigid, long-proven, and handles heat well. PEX installs with fewer fittings, tolerates our water chemistry better, resists pinholing, and usually costs less because it goes in faster. We will recommend based on your home's layout and access, and either way you decide.

How long does a repipe take?

Most single-story Elgin homes take two to four days including patching. Two-story homes and larger floor plans run longer. You keep water every evening — you are not without service overnight.

Do I have to move out?

Almost never. Water is shut off during working hours and restored before we leave each day. Some households prefer to be elsewhere during the noisiest day, but it is not required.

Is a partial repipe ever sensible?

Occasionally — if failures are confined to one clearly identifiable run, replacing that section is reasonable. But if the pipe is the same age and material throughout, partial work usually means paying mobilization and patching costs twice.

A plumbing problem should
not become a renovation.

If it is safe, close the nearest shutoff valve, move belongings away from water, and tell us exactly what you see.
