New water filtration connection under a kitchen sink

Overview

Alexander Plumbing and Sewer provides professional water softener and reverse osmosis water filtration system installation, repair, replacement and maintenance for residential and commercial properties throughout Elgin, Illinois and the surrounding communities. Our experienced plumbers install and service water treatment systems designed to improve water quality, reduce mineral buildup and provide cleaner, better-tasting water.

Water softeners reduce the hardness minerals that cause scale in plumbing fixtures, water heaters, appliances and water distribution piping. Reverse osmosis systems provide advanced drinking water treatment, reducing many dissolved contaminants, impurities and unwanted tastes and odors. Whether you're dealing with hard water, mineral deposits, poor water quality or a problem with an existing filtration system, we provide dependable solutions tailored to your property's water treatment needs.

Symptoms

Signs you need water treatment

Spots on glasses and fixtures

White mineral residue after water evaporates. Cosmetic on its own, but a reliable indicator of what is happening inside the pipes.

Soap that will not lather

Calcium binds with soap instead of foaming. It is why you use more detergent than you expect and why laundry can feel stiff.

Water heater rumbling

Hardened sediment on the tank floor. It steals capacity, costs efficiency, and is a leading reason local heaters fail early.

Scale at shower heads and aerators

Mineral crust narrowing the openings, showing up as reduced or uneven flow at individual fixtures.

An existing system that is not working

A softener that stops regenerating, salt that never goes down, or a reverse osmosis system with slow flow or off tastes. We repair, service or replace existing filtration equipment.

Our process

How we size a system

  1. Test the water

We look at your water, your fixtures and any existing equipment, and check hardness and dissolved solids where it matters. Recommendations follow what we find.

  2. Match the system to the property

Softener capacity depends on hardness and daily consumption. Undersized units regenerate constantly and wear out; oversized units waste salt and water.

  3. Install properly

Correct placement, a bypass valve so the system can be serviced without shutting off the house, and appropriate drain routing for regeneration.

  4. Set up and service

We set the system up, show you what maintenance it needs, and service it when filters or components are due.

Water Treatment questions

Answers before you book.

More questions on our full FAQ page.

How hard is Elgin water?

It generally lands in the hard to very hard range, though it varies by city and by which source your area is drawing from at the time. Because it moves, we test at your tap rather than quoting a regional average.

Softener or salt-free conditioner?

A true softener uses ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium — it is the only thing that actually makes water soft, and you will feel the difference. A salt-free conditioner does not remove minerals; it changes their form so they are less likely to deposit as scale. Conditioners need no salt and waste no water, which matters if you are on a septic system or want lower maintenance.

Will a softener help my water heater last longer?

Yes, and this is the strongest practical argument for one locally. Most of what kills water heaters here is sediment accumulation. Reducing what enters the tank meaningfully extends its life.

Do I need whole-house filtration if I only care about drinking water?

No. If the goal is taste at the kitchen tap, an under-sink RO system is far cheaper and does that job better. Whole-house treatment is about protecting plumbing and appliances.

A plumbing problem should
not become a renovation.

If it is safe, close the nearest shutoff valve, move belongings away from water, and tell us exactly what you see.
