Upon hearing my water heater hissing for 20 minutes, I called Alexander Plumbing. They were able to send someone out within the hour to inspect it. Then they were able to replace the water heater early the next morning…

Plumbing questions, answered straight
If the answer to a question is that you probably do not need us, that is what it says below. Anything not covered here, just ask when you call.
Questions
Booking & arrival
Which areas do you serve?
We serve Elgin and nearby communities. Confirm your ZIP when you book so we can give you an accurate arrival window.
How does an appointment begin?
Tell us what you are seeing, when it started, and anything that changed recently. That context lets the plumber arrive with the right equipment rather than making a second trip for it.
What information should I have ready?
Your ZIP code, which fixture or area is affected, when the problem began, and a few clear photos if you can take them. Photos genuinely help — they often tell us which parts to bring.
Do you give arrival windows or just a day?
A window, and we call ahead. Being told to wait somewhere between eight and five is not a schedule.
Are you really available 24/7?
Yes. You can call at any hour. For genuine emergencies — active flooding, sewage backing up, a leaking gas line — we dispatch around the clock.
Questions
Pricing & estimates
How do you price work?
Flat rate, quoted and approved before we start. You are not paying an hourly rate while someone works out what to do, and the number does not change unless the scope does — in which case we stop and talk to you first.
Is there a charge for the visit?
There is a standard service call charge that covers travel and diagnosis. On most jobs it comes off the price if you go ahead with the work.
Will you give a price over the phone?
For straightforward, well-defined jobs, yes. For anything requiring diagnosis — leaks, recurring clogs, repipes — a phone number would be a guess, and guessed numbers are how people end up feeling misled on the invoice.
Do you offer financing?
For larger jobs like repipes and sewer replacements, yes. Ask when you book and we will go through the options before the work is scheduled.
Do you charge more for nights and weekends?
After-hours emergency work carries a premium, and we tell you what it is before we dispatch — not after the work is done.
Questions
Emergencies
What should I do if a pipe is actively leaking?
If it is safe, close the nearest fixture shutoff, or the home's main water valve if you cannot isolate it. Move belongings clear of the water, then call us. Knowing where your main shutoff is before you need it is the single most useful piece of plumbing knowledge a homeowner can have.
Sewage is backing up into the house. What now?
Stop running water anywhere — no sinks, no toilets, and especially not the washing machine, which dumps a large volume quickly. Keep people and pets away from the affected area and call us. This is one of the situations we treat as a genuine emergency.
I smell gas. What should I do?
Leave the building immediately. Do not touch light switches, appliances, or your phone until you are outside — a spark is the actual hazard. From outside, call the gas utility's emergency line first; they will shut off supply at no charge. Then call us for the repair.
My water heater is leaking. Is that urgent?
Shut the cold water supply valve at the top of the tank and turn the gas control to off, or switch off the breaker for an electric unit. That contains it. Then call — a weeping tank tends to fail properly rather than gradually.
Questions
Diagnosis & repairs
Why does the same drain keep clogging?
Recurring clogs on one line almost always mean something structural: root intrusion, a belly where the pipe has settled, or heavy grease and scale coating the walls. Snaking clears a channel through it, which is why the problem returns. A camera inspection tells you which of those it is.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
It comes down to the age of the tank and where the failure is. Under eight years with a component failure is usually worth repairing. Past twelve with a problem at the tank itself usually is not. We diagnose first and tell you which situation you are in.
Do you use chemical drain cleaners?
No, and we would rather you did not either. They rarely clear a full blockage, they sit in standing water, and they make the line hazardous for whoever opens it next. If you have already used some, just tell us.
How accurate is electronic leak detection?
Typically within a foot or two. That is the whole point — it means the repair opens one small area instead of somebody removing drywall across a room looking for the source.
Can you work on a fixture I supplied myself?
Yes, and that is common. The one caveat is that we can only warranty our installation, not the fixture. If a homeowner-supplied unit is defective, the replacement has to come from your supplier.
Questions
Elgin specifics
Why do water heaters seem to fail early around here?
Hard water. Dissolved minerals settle out as sediment on the tank floor, which steals capacity, hurts efficiency, and causes the popping sound people describe. Annual flushing meaningfully extends tank life locally, and it is the cheapest maintenance there is.
Why do older OC homes get so many pinhole leaks?
Copper installed in the 1950s through 70s thins from the inside over decades, and our water chemistry accelerates it. One pinhole is an event. Repeat pinholes mean the pipe wall is thinning throughout the system, and patching indefinitely costs more than repiping once.
Are slab leaks common in Elgin?
Yes, because most of the county is built on slab with supply lines running underneath. The typical signs are a warm patch on the floor, an unexplained jump in the water bill, or the sound of running water when the house is quiet.
Do I need a permit for plumbing work?
For water heater replacement, gas lines, repipes, and sewer work — yes, in Elgin jurisdictions. We pull permits as part of the job. Unpermitted work is both a safety question and something that surfaces when you sell.
Questions
Working in your home
Will you protect my floors?
Floor protection goes down before tools come in, shoe covers are standard, and the work area is cleaned before we leave. Old parts and packaging leave with us.
Are your plumbers licensed and background checked?
Yes to both, and we are licensed and insured as a company. Whoever knocks on your door will have identification.
Do I need to be home for the whole visit?
You need to be there at the start so we can look at the problem together and agree on the work, and at the end so we can show you what was done. In between is up to you.
Do you warranty your work?
Yes. Labor and materials both carry a warranty, and the term varies by job type. It is stated in writing on your invoice rather than being something you have to ask about later.

My kitchen drain was backing up and I have long pipes to get to the main stack- Paul was able to get enough length to free up the clog. He also used a chemical to super fulsh the pipes. Great service- Paul was very good…
Pat and Neil are absolutely fantastic. We had a bit of an emergency plumbing issue and they were so calm and informative on the phone. Neil was at our home within an hour and did excellent work! Definitely recommend…
A plumbing problem should
not become a renovation.
If it is safe, close the nearest shutoff valve, move belongings away from water, and tell us exactly what you see.
